Interview tips and advice for students

In the following guide we will tell you how to get that dream job with a few interview tips. This guide will show you what to do, how to sit and even what colour tie to wear.

Do your homework A few days before the interview try and find out some information about the company or employer. This will help you understand what the employer is looking for in the ideal employee. For example, if they're looking for a chef position to fill in a busy restaurant they will look out for working under pressure but at a high standard, good management skills and hygiene. Try and prepare what you are going to say when they ask these questions later in the interview. Also make sure you know how to get to the place of the interview. It will save time on the day and prevent you from being late. Prepare yourself Make sure that you have got everything you need for the interview. Portfolio (record of achievement) of your working and educational life, up-to-date CV, application form, details of employer and any other additional information. Another good tip would be to turn-off your mobile phone.

What should I wear? Make sure you wear all your best smart gear for the interview. Polish your shoes, iron your stuff and wear stuff that makes you look smart but pleasant. For you lads, try and wear a smart but colourful tie. This will show your employer that you have a good personality. For the girls, look smart but not too sexy because some employers may feel that other people think they are employing you because of your looks (Good advice for the boys aswell).

What should I do when I get there? When you get to the place of the interview, arrive 5-10 minutes early to show you are keen. Never be late!! If you do arrive late, apologies and don't make up excuses, they really hate that. Introduce yourself to the reception area with a smile, your name and your reason for being here.

Entering the interview room When you enter the room greet all the people in the room with a handshake, a smile and say 'Im Joe Bloggs, pleased to meet you'. Wait till you are asked to sit or ask if you can sit. When you sit down sit up strait with your arms unfolded and learn forward a little. This is the body language they are looking for. It tells the employer that you are an open person who is keen and respectful of the people present. When answering question be honest and always look them in the eye. Try and make your answer interesting and use your hands a little while you talk. Don't make up skills you can't do because this will jeopardize you future with the employer if you get the job.

End of the interview When they ask you if there is any thing else you would like to add, sell yourself like crazy. Tell them about your communication and team working skills and other skills you excel at. When you have finished your little speech say thank you for seeing me and I hope to here from you in the near future. When the interview is over, stand up and put your chair tidy. Say thanks again and leave the room with a smile and shut the door behind you.

We hope you have found this article helpful and you get that dream job you are looking for.
